AWS is putting a sharper label on where it thinks enterprise AI is heading: frontier agents. In the company’s framing, these are not lightweight assistants that wait for a prompt and return a suggestion. They are autonomous systems built to pursue larger goals, run many tasks in parallel, and keep working for hours or days when the job demands it.
That pitch matters because it moves the enterprise AI conversation away from simple productivity add-ons and toward delegated work. If AWS is right, the next contest among cloud vendors will be fought around who can make agents capable enough for real operations while still giving companies the governance and review points they need.
AWS Wants Agents That Can Keep Going
At AWS’s London Summit, Francessca Vasquez, vice president of professional services and agentic AI at AWS, described frontier agents around three ideas: autonomy, scale, and persistence. In practical terms, that means an agent should be able to take a goal, decide how to pursue it, coordinate multiple subtasks, and continue operating beyond a single chat session.
That is a much more ambitious promise than “AI copilot” branding. A copilot is usually expected to assist a human. A frontier agent is being positioned as a system that can carry more of the execution burden itself. For software teams, security groups, operations leaders, and data-heavy organizations, that distinction is the whole story.
AWS is using Kiro as one example of the shift. The agentic development platform is designed to turn natural language direction into structured software work, but with planning artifacts built in before code is written. That includes user stories, acceptance criteria, technical design documents, and architecture diagrams. The point is not just to make code appear faster; it is to make the process more legible before the code lands.
Kiro Shows the Tradeoff: Speed Needs Structure
Motorway, the U.K. used car marketplace, offered one of the more concrete examples from the source material. Principal engineer Ryan Cormack said more than 80% of Motorway’s engineers use Kiro daily, with the system generating more than a million lines of code each month.
That kind of adoption is impressive, but it also exposes the central governance problem with agentic coding. AI-generated software can move faster than humans can review it consistently. Motorway’s answer was not to remove oversight, but to standardize it. Cormack said the company emphasized planning phases, review checkpoints, and engineers actively steering Kiro through code writing so teams do not lose control.
That is likely the template for a lot of enterprise agent deployments. The winners will not simply be the tools that produce the most output. They will be the systems that create enough surrounding structure for organizations to trust the output without slowing everything back down to the old pace.
DevOps, Security, and Sustainability Are Early Targets
AWS also showcased DevOps and security agents meant to diagnose errors and scan for vulnerabilities while software is being built. These are natural early markets for frontier agents because the work is repetitive, high-volume, and full of patterns that can be checked against known standards.
The company is also stretching the agent story into data and sustainability. AWS has partnered with London’s Natural History Museum on environmental monitoring, deploying sensors across the museum’s South Kensington gardens to capture real-time data on urban conditions, biodiversity, temperature, and traffic. Hillary Tam, AWS’s head of go-to-market sustainability for EMEA, said the project has already produced around eight million data points and continues to grow.
That example is less about agents writing code and more about the broader enterprise AI loop: collect data, organize it, model it, and turn it into decisions. With European sustainability reporting requirements pushing more operational data into cloud systems, AWS is arguing that compliance can become a foundation for new analysis and even new business models.
The Enterprise Agent Race Is Becoming a Governance Race
AWS is not alone in chasing long-running enterprise agents, but its emphasis on frontier agents gives the company a clear narrative. The cloud provider wants to be seen not only as infrastructure for AI models, but as the operating layer for agentic work across software, security, and industrial data.
The risk is that autonomy without process becomes chaos at enterprise scale. The more capable the agent, the more important the boundaries become: permissions, review checkpoints, security responsibility, data provenance, and clear ownership when something goes wrong. That is why references to AWS’s shared responsibility model are not incidental. They are part of the trust architecture AWS needs around more autonomous systems.
Frontier agents may become a useful term, or it may become another piece of AI branding. The substance will come down to whether companies can use these systems to shorten real workflows without creating hidden review debt. AWS is betting that enterprises are ready for agents that do more than assist. The harder part is proving they can do it safely, repeatedly, and under human control.
