OpenAI and AWS are expanding their strategic partnership in a way that pushes OpenAI deeper into the enterprise infrastructure stack. The companies are bringing OpenAI models to Amazon Bedrock, making Codex configurable through Bedrock, and launching Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents powered by OpenAI in limited preview.

The timing matters. Just days after Microsoft and OpenAI redrew the rules of their partnership, OpenAI is now showing what a less Azure-exclusive future can look like in practice. Microsoft still matters enormously to OpenAI, but AWS gives the company another route into large enterprises that already run critical workloads, identity systems, procurement, and compliance processes inside Amazon’s cloud.

OpenAI Models Are Coming To Bedrock

The first part of the partnership is straightforward but strategically important: OpenAI models, including GPT-5.5, are coming to Amazon Bedrock. That means AWS customers will be able to build with OpenAI models inside the same managed AI service they may already use for model access, governance, and enterprise deployment.

For companies, this is less about model availability in isolation and more about operational fit. Large organizations often resist AI tools that require new procurement paths, separate security reviews, unfamiliar identity controls, or data flows outside their existing cloud architecture. Bedrock gives OpenAI a way to meet those buyers where they already are.

That could make OpenAI easier to adopt for teams that have been waiting for a cleaner AWS-native path. Developers can use OpenAI models for new applications, embedded product intelligence, and agentic workflows while staying closer to the infrastructure and governance systems their companies already trust.

Codex Gets An AWS Route

The second piece is Codex. OpenAI says more than 4 million people now use Codex every week, and the company is increasingly positioning it as a broader work agent rather than only a coding assistant. Teams use it to write code, explain systems, refactor applications, generate tests, modernize old codebases, and support research or document-heavy workflows.

Now, companies can configure Codex to use Amazon Bedrock as the provider, beginning with Codex CLI, the Codex desktop app, and the Visual Studio Code extension. For enterprises with AWS commitments, that is a significant packaging change. It lets them run Codex workflows through Bedrock while using AWS billing, availability, and security controls.

OpenAI’s message is clear: Codex is becoming part of enterprise software infrastructure, not just a developer productivity product. If a company already has Bedrock access and cloud commitments with AWS, OpenAI wants Codex adoption to feel like an extension of that environment rather than a separate buying motion.

Managed Agents Move The Fight To Production

The most forward-looking part of the announcement is Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents powered by OpenAI. These agents are meant to maintain context, execute multi-step workflows, use tools, and take action across business processes.

That is where the enterprise AI market is heading. Many companies have experimented with agents, but production deployment remains difficult because the hard parts are not only model capability. They include orchestration, permissions, tool use, monitoring, rollback, data access, and compliance. Bedrock Managed Agents is AWS and OpenAI’s attempt to package more of that infrastructure into a managed path.

For OpenAI, this also expands the surface area of its enterprise strategy. The company is not merely selling API access to models. It is moving toward systems that can sit inside business workflows and take action, with AWS supplying much of the trusted enterprise wrapper around deployment.

A New Post-Microsoft Horizon

The AWS announcement should be read alongside OpenAI’s changing Microsoft relationship. The amended Microsoft deal preserved Azure’s central role while giving OpenAI more freedom to serve customers across other clouds. This AWS expansion is the first major proof point of why that flexibility matters.

OpenAI now has a cleaner way to reach companies whose AI road maps are built around AWS. AWS gets access to one of the most commercially important AI providers. Customers get a route to OpenAI models and Codex without abandoning existing cloud controls. The arrangement does not replace Microsoft, but it does make OpenAI look less dependent on a single infrastructure partner.

That broader distribution could become one of OpenAI’s most important advantages. The frontier model race is expensive, but enterprise adoption is also a trust and integration race. The companies that win will not only have strong models; they will make those models easy to deploy inside the messy systems large organizations already use.
