Anthropic appears to have quietly changed who gets access to Claude Code. Based on a pricing-page screenshot shared Tuesday in an X post from George Pu, the coding product is no longer included in the Pro plan and now appears reserved for Max tiers starting at $100 a month.
If that reading is correct, the move is more than a minor packaging tweak. It would raise the minimum monthly price for Claude Code access from $20 to $100, a fivefold jump that lands directly on some of Anthropic’s most engaged developer users.
A Pricing Change With No Public Announcement
What makes the change notable is not just the size of the price jump, but the way it surfaced. There does not appear to be a corresponding public announcement in the material provided here, only an updated pricing-page view showing Claude Code excluded from Free and Pro while still available on Max 5x and Max 20x.
That kind of change matters because Claude Code is not a peripheral perk. For many power users, it is one of the clearest reasons to pay Anthropic at all. Moving it out of Pro effectively redraws the boundary between casual subscribers and serious coding users, and does so through pricing rather than through a new product launch.

Why Developers Will Care
The immediate issue is predictability. Subscription businesses do change feature packaging all the time, but developer tools tend to create deeper workflow dependence than ordinary consumer software. If someone has built part of their daily coding routine around Claude Code inside Pro, a sudden shift to a $100 starting point is not a small upsell. It is a forced re-evaluation of whether the tool still fits the budget.
That also feeds a broader concern around monetization in AI coding products. As coding assistants become more central to paid AI offerings, providers are increasingly carving them out as premium capabilities rather than bundling them into lower-cost general subscriptions. Anthropic may be signaling that Claude Code belongs in that higher-value category.
The Broader Signal
Even if this turns out to be a temporary pricing-page adjustment or the prelude to a more formal plan update, the signal is clear: Anthropic appears to see Claude Code as a premium product, not a standard Pro-tier feature. That will matter for users comparing Anthropic’s pricing strategy with other AI coding tools that are competing aggressively on access and value.

Pro users wanting it need Max now.
$100/month minimum. 5x jump.
I'm on Max 20x so I'm fine.
Flagging for anyone on Pro who's about to find out.
